Abstract: Location-based services (LBS) deliver data and information based primarily on the geographical location of a mobile IoT (Internet of Things) user. Localization techniques play an important role in geolocation in the IoT ecosystem. Localization techniques based on wireless communication systems in IoT (hereafter abbreviated as WLT) are surveyed and reviewed in the paper. Fundamental theories related to WLT are introduced at the beginning of the second part. Then different kinds of WLT are analyzed and modeled mathematically. Next, the advantages and disadvantages, application potential as well as implementation issues and challenges of WLT are discussed and evaluated in the third part. Several trends of development and recommendations for further researches are drawn in the final part of the paper.
